2006/April - YSA Red, White, and Green! climate change event @ UH Manoa
A $500 grant from YSA in partnership with the Civil Society Institute and State Farm Insurance made an event to increase awareness of climate change possible at UH Manoa. The event featured an open discussion panel including a diverse mix of local politicians, academics, and private industry leaders as well as a bike-powered smoothie fundraiser, sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs, and prize give-away.
2007/February - A‛ole Lā‛au: A Photojournal
In February of 2007, we travelled to Moloka‛i, Hawai‛i to document supposed community support for the controversial Moloka‛i Ranch development plan. "The Plan", as referred to by some islanders, proposed to add hundreds of multi-million dollar luxury homes to a pristine coastline without addressing major environmental impacts, primarily the lack of available water. Community outrage ultimately prevented the project from progressing, and the Ranch retaliated by shutting down its operations, leaving many people who relied on the Ranch for jobs and water, sewer infrastructure uncertain about the future.
2007/April - Holmes Hall Bulletin Boards
Funded by the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and designed, constructed, and installed by two College of Engineering (CoE) students, the four 4'x8' bulletin boards provide a low-tech means of disseminating information while fostering community interaction. After four years at UHM, Kim was fed up with the disconnect between the CoE and the rest of the university, the lack of communication and collaboration between departments (and between faculty and students) within the CoE, and, as the student representative for the CoE in ASUH, not having a visible, convenient place to communicate the interesting happenings of the undergraduate student government with her constituents. Because asking for permanent webspace to host an online community forum would have caused heads to explode, traditional bulletin boards were built. It worked out for the best - real interaction is always better than virtual!
2008/April - Bike-powered blender
The bike blender was reinvented for Earth Day 2008 event, organized by the folks at Sustainable Saunders at UH Manoa, to be used as an attraction at the Cycle Manoa booth. More photos of this event can be found here. The bike was more recently featured at a Nature Conservancy event. If we ever get to it, we'll upgrade it again so it works better.
2008/July - Windows Vista Refund
Two months of badgering HP customer support resulted in a $200 refund for Windows Vista.
2008/August - Restoring Kenyan mangrove ecosystems
With a grant from Travelocity's Travel for Good program, Kim travelled to Kenya to volunteer with this Earthwatch expedition. Trip coverage is currently being posted to the front page of this site.
